How Trolling Motor Battery Runtime is Calculated
Trolling motor runtime is determined by dividing your battery's usable Amp-Hours (Ah) by the motor's effective current draw (Amps) at your selected throttle setting:
*Note: Trolling motors do not draw linear current. At low trolling speeds (Speed 1 or 2), pulse-width modulation (PWM) draws dramatically less amperage (often 4A to 12A). At 100% Wide-Open Throttle (WOT), current jumps to the motor's maximum amp rating.
Typical Motor Thrust & Amp Draw Reference
Use these standard factory specifications for major brands including Minn Kota, MotorGuide, Haswing, and Newport Vessels:
| Thrust (lbs) | System Voltage | Max Amp Draw | Rec. Circuit Breaker | 100Ah Lithium Runtime (50% Throttle) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 30 lbs | 12V | 30 Amps | 40A – 50A | ~10.5 hrs |
| 40 – 45 lbs | 12V | 42 Amps | 50A | ~7.8 hrs |
| 55 lbs (Most Common) | 12V | 50 Amps | 60A | ~6.4 hrs |
| 70 lbs | 24V | 42 Amps | 50A | ~7.8 hrs |
| 80 lbs | 24V | 56 Amps | 60A | ~5.9 hrs |
| 112 lbs | 36V | 52 Amps | 60A | ~6.2 hrs |
🔋 LiFePO4 Lithium Batteries
Lithium iron phosphate batteries provide constant voltage throughout 95% of their discharge cycle. They do not suffer from Peukert’s effect, allowing full 100% capacity extraction without voltage sag or motor stalling.
⚠️ AGM & Deep Cycle Lead-Acid
Drawing traditional lead-acid or AGM batteries below 50% capacity causes severe lead sulfation on battery plates. In addition, high amp draws create Peukert losses, dropping effective output capacity by up to 30%.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long will a 100Ah battery run a 55 lb thrust trolling motor?
With a 100Ah 12V lithium (LiFePO4) battery, you can expect approximately 2 to 2.2 hours at continuous wide-open throttle (100%), or 6 to 7 hours at moderate cruising speeds (Speed 2 to 3). With an AGM battery of the same rating, runtime is cut in half to approximately 1 hour at full throttle.
What size circuit breaker do I need for my trolling motor?
Most manufacturers (including Minn Kota) mandate a 50A or 60A manual-reset waterproof marine circuit breaker installed within 7 inches of the battery's positive terminal. This protects your boat's wiring harness from melting in case the propeller gets jammed in weeds or fishing line.
Can I run two 12V batteries in series for a 24V motor?
Yes. Connecting the positive terminal of Battery 1 to the negative terminal of Battery 2 doubles voltage to 24V while keeping Amp-hour capacity the same (e.g., two 12V 100Ah batteries in series produce 24V at 100Ah). Ensure both batteries are identical in age, capacity, and brand.
